No One Is Immune to Layoffs

This is a conversation I often have with employees at all levels—when they share anxiety about layoffs, reorganizations, or unsettling rumors circulating inside or outside the organization.

Science backs what many of us feel: emotions during change are contagious. Through mirror neurons, we absorb the stress, fear, or uncertainty of those around us. That anxiety spreads fast—and when left unaddressed, it erodes focus, morale, and trust.

In my work with leaders, I help them move from reactivity to intention—from anxiety to clarity—so they can support stronger, more emotionally grounded teams.

If you’re navigating uncertainty, here are three things you can do today to regain control during these events:

1. Be ready and strong internally: Build genuine relationships with senior leaders and have open, honest career conversations. Showcase your values and strengths broadly.

2. Expand your external network: Stay connected beyond your current role. Reach out to former colleagues, reconnect with friends, and engage in industry groups or events. Don’t wait, your next opportunity might come from a single conversation. Keep your LinkedIn profile up to date and stay visible in professional circles.

3. Keep your knowledge fresh: Stay curious. Stay relevant. The more adaptable you are, the more resilient you’ll be—regardless of what’s changing around you.

You can’t control the market. But you can strengthen your foundation and respond with intention.

Unfortunately, we live in a volatile world, and as change practitioners, we increasingly encounter such events regularly.
